Cavapoo vs Cockapoo: Which Is Right for You?
Cavapoo and Cockapoo sound almost the same and look similar in photos, but they come from different spaniels — and that difference shapes their energy and personality. Here's how to choose.
The core difference: which spaniel
Both are Poodle crosses, so the difference comes down to the other parent. A Cavapoo is crossed with a Cavalier King Charles Spaniel — a gentle, companion-bred lapdog. A Cockapoo is crossed with a Cocker Spaniel — historically a working gundog with more drive and stamina. That single fact explains most of the personality differences below.
Temperament and energy
Both are affectionate, sociable and great with families. The nuance: Cavapoos lean slightly calmer and more content to potter, thanks to the Cavalier's lapdog heritage, while Cockapoos often bring a bit more energy, drive and busy-ness from the working Cocker line. Neither is "better" — a Cockapoo may suit an active, outdoorsy home, while a Cavapoo may suit someone wanting a slightly more laid-back companion. Both dislike being left alone.
Size
They overlap heavily. Cavapoos typically run 5–9 kg; Cockapoos are similar but can be a little larger depending on the Cocker and Poodle used. In both cases the Poodle parent (Toy vs Miniature) is the main size lever — see our Cavapoo size guide.
Grooming and shedding
Practically identical: both inherit low-shedding, hair-like coats that need regular brushing and a professional groom every 6–8 weeks, and both mat if you neglect them. Whichever you choose, you're signing up for a grooming routine — our grooming guide applies to both.
So which should you choose?
Forget the photos — they look too alike to decide on. Choose on energy and lifestyle: if you want a slightly calmer, cuddlier companion, lean Cavapoo; if you want a bouncier, more athletic partner for long walks and activities, lean Cockapoo. In both cases, meet the parents, prioritise health testing, and remember that the individual dog's personality matters more than the label.
